How to “Keep Up” Appearances at Work When You’re Depressed
How do you keep up appearances in a new role when you’re depressed?
In short, our answer is don’t! Don’t try to fake it.
You don’t have to tell your employer that you’re depressed, BUT you can be honest about your needs and concerns.
Ask to set up a meeting with your boss and start by saying what you imagine they are feeling, followed by a statement of appreciation for the behavior you want to see more of.
It might sound like this, “If I were in your shoes, I’d be concerned about the lack of communication between us and that can be an issue sometimes. I really appreciate the patience you’ve given me so far in this role as I try to build more confidence.”
From there, you’ll want to open that up to figure out how to come to a solution together.
